Wolf Island Provincial Park is a water-access non-operating provincial park situated between Lovesick and Lower Buckhorn Lakes.  It is possible to circumnavigate the island by canoe or kayak using two short portages.  One portage adjacent to Lock 30 uses a restored “canoe slide” consisting of a series of rollers to move your canoe between the lakes.  On the north end of the island, between Wolf  and Grey Duck Islands, a traditional portage allows passage between the two lakes.

What You'll Like:

Paleozoic limestone outcroppings rub shoulders with much older, Precambrian bedrock on this island, which is only accessible by boat. Boaters can access by foot only from Lovesick Lake Lock #30. There is no road access. During the late Wisconsinan-era, glaciers carved crescent-shaped gouges and striations in the bedrock here. The island is blanketed by a variety of vegetation, including swamp forest and thickets, mixed and deciduous forest, and open rockland forest of scattered trees and shrubs.

Park Facilities and Activities: This is a non-operating park. There are no activities or facilities at this park. Existing crown land campsites, with only some interconnected by trails, are present. For safety reasons, swimming is prohibited near the locks and dams of the nearby Trent-Severn Waterway.

Location: The main portion of Wolf Island Provincial Park is an island between Lower Buckhorn and Lovesick Lakes, some 35 km north of Peterborough via Highway 28. There is no road access. Access is by boat only. The northern mainland part of the park does not have any public access points with exception by boat. Visitors may park and launch a boat from Lock #28 in Burleigh Falls (fees may be applicable). Wolf Island is west of the launch approximately 5km. This route will allow you east side access to the park. To access the western side by boat is to travel through Lock # 30. Please contact Parks Canada for information regarding fees and seasons.

Fish Species:

Fish populations were surveyed by the OMNR using large and small mesh nets to provide information on fish species present and their characteristics, such as growth, age, and abundance. The catch data below show  species were surveyed in large mesh nets. Additional fish species observed in small mesh nets were Blackchin Shiner, Logperch, Spot-tail Shiner, and Trout-perch.
